Preparation of nitrogen and use of nitrogen.

Nitrogen (N2

It is known as foul gas means it not support in combustion.

Preparation

  • By Lab method :- In lab it is prepared heating of Ammonium nitrate.

                     NH4NO2       N2 + 3H2O

         (Ammonium nitrite)

  • By heating of Ammonium dichromate :- When such compound is heated then nitrogen is obtained.

            (NH4)2 Cr2O7     N2 + Cr2O3 + 4H2O

  • By Ammonia :- Pure nitrogen is obtained when ammonia is fast over copper oxide catalyst.

              2NH3 + 3CuO → N2 + 3Cu + 3H2O

  • By heating of Barium Azide 

                  Ba(N3)2       Ba + 3N2

             (Barium azide)

Properties of Nitrogen :-

  • It is Colourless , Odorless and tasteless gas.
  • It neither combust and not support in combustion.
  • It is in soluble in water.
  • It turns into liquid at -195oC.
  • It is not poisonous in nature but organic can not serve in presence of such gas because it displaces the oxygen so such gas is known as death gas.

Chemical Properties of Nitrogen :-

  • It is present in nature due to presence of triple bond between Nitrogen atom.
  • Reaction atom with oxygen :- It react in oxygen at very high temperature and form Nitric Oxide.

            N2 + O2   200C    2NO (Nitric oxide)

  • Reaction with Hydrogen :- Nitrogen react with hydrogen in presence of iron , Aluminium catalyst high pressure and temperature ammonia is obtained.

                 N2 + 3H2    Fe/ Al 200C   2NH3

  • Reaction with metal :- Reactive metal react with Nitrogen to form their Nitrite.

           6Li + N2   2Li3N

           6Mg + 2N2  2Mg3N2(Magnesium nitrite)

          6Ca + 2N2  2Ca3N2

  • Reaction with non-metal :- Non-metal or metalloid react with Nitrogen to form their Nitrite.

           2B + N2 → 2BN (Boron nitrite)

          6S + 2N2 → 2S3N2 (Sulpher nitrite)

  • Reaction with calcium carbide :- Calcium carbide react with nitrogen to form Calcium cyanide it is also called Nitrolium.

          CaC2 + N2 → CaCN2 + C (Calcium cyanide)

        Uses of Nitrogen :-

  • It is used in a chemical Reaction for giving inert condition.
  • It is used for making ammonia.
  • It is used as antioxidant.
